Better Than the Dream

Ashley Harris

She packed up her life that day
Put it in the back of her car
Cashed her last check and prayed
She and her little girl wouldn’t starve
‘Cause she’s got a dream that
She’ll land a record deal
And see her name in lights up in Nashville

And she don’t know
What tomorrow will bring but for now she’s singing
I won’t give up
On the dream
It’s who I am
I must believe
And when she prays
She asks for God’s blessing—that it ‘aint wishful thinking
Her dreams will come true somehow

Well ten years passed on by while she raised her little girl
She singing at the club weekend nights hopin’
It’ll cover the bills
‘Till the day when an offer came
That took her by surprise
And she looked so beautiful
All dressed up in white

And she don’t know
What tomorrow will bring but for now she’s singing
I won’t give up
On the dream
It’s who I am
I must believe
And when she prays
She asks for God’s blessing—that it ‘aint wishful thinking
Her dreams will come true somehow

Now their sittin’ round the table
Havin’ dinner every
And they fall asleep listening
To her sing a lullaby

‘Bout how dreams of fame and fortune and notoriety
Could never hold a candle to
The love her family brings
Yea, the dream she’d been chasing wasn’t meant to be
‘Cause God had a different plan that was
Better than the Dream

And she don’t know
What tomorrow will bring but she’ll always be singing
I’m thankful for
All the ways
God has blessed me today
‘Cause life is so sweet
With my loved ones around me and a heart full of memories
And she sings of the joy she’s found
